Raise your hand if you’ve missed a writing goal.
We learn early that the way to succeed is to set goals. I’ve just spent the morning setting myself up for the coming month, part of which was setting intentions of what I want to accomplish before July is over.
Setting goals feels good — it gives us a hit of dopamine. This is why we do things like set unreasonable New Year’s resolutions: it feels good to imagine achieving them.
But what we enjoy imagining accomplishing is not always reasonable to get done in the time allotted. Even worse, we may not have complete control over the goal at all.
