Are you a plotter or a pantser?

This feels like the “What do you do?” question we face in the general non-writing world.

Once we’re in a group of writers, we all start sniffing around each other’s methods, as if that holds the secret to all our desires.

What we’re really asking each other with the plotting/pantsing question is this:

How much do you plan?

The issue is that we want there to be a right answer. I hate to break it to you, but there isn’t one.

If the topic of planning makes you weak in the knees with joy, you may want to join us for Plan to Page, a training I’m running on August 11.

I have found that there are more useful and less useful approaches to both planning and pantsing, and we’ll be looking at how to balance the two (without triggering the critic) in today’s post.
