As the length of our days changes, reading stories of new beginnings appeals
Whether light is lengthening or shrinking in your part of the world, we feel the shoulder of the shift the most. In this middle ground, we may gain or lose minutes a day and suddenly there’s an extra hour of light — or dark — we haven’t yet grown used to.
During these phases of the year, I’m pulled to stories of transformation. What books have you read lately where characters reinvent themselves, make a dramatic new start, or walk away from their current lives entirely?
Let’s read ourselves into the season. Can’t wait to hear what you love in this topic.
A few I enjoy in Spring:
Enchanted April, Elizabeth von Arnim
The Faraway Nearby, Rebecca Solnit
The Mermaid of Black Conch, Monique Roffey
A few for Autumn:
The Sadness of Beautiful Things, Simon Van Booy
O Caledonia, Elspeth Barker
The Liar’s Dictionary, Eley Williams
Am also reading An Enchanted April — has taken me many Aprils living in Italy to finally get to it…
Recently finished The Artist by Lucy Steeds which has definitely left its mark on me after not being sure initially.
